Stepping Stones Museum for Children has been temporarily closed to the public since March 13. Despite this period of closure, which has resulted in significant losses in revenue, Stepping Stones remains a committed community anchor that develops innovative responses to our community’s needs. For example, our award-winning museum partnered with Norwalk Public Schools this summer to serve more than 1,300 students through a 5-week series of in-person and virtual authentic performance tasks promoting healthy children and healthy communities.

VIRTUAL LEARNING

The team at Stepping Stones is still sharing free, interactive educational content with members and the general public on a weekly basis through our website, e-newsletter and social media channels. These engaging, high-quality virtual experiences provide STEAM-infused, early language-and literacy-inspired opportunities for children and families to learn from and enjoy during this challenging time. Since March, the museum has served more 76,000 children, teachers, and caregivers through these virtual programs and resources.

KC 2020

Speaking of high-quality virtual experiences, we’re in the midst of planning KC 2020, our inaugural kids’ convention which will give children across Connecticut and beyond an unprecedented community platform for expressing their thoughts and feelings about their place in the world and their vision for the future. Scheduled for October 17 and 18, this virtual convening will be a globally-accessible opportunity to support children as active, engaged members of their community. A nationwide call for dialogue and solutions is required due to the health, social, environmental and political issues that have defined 2020. As a result, fostering more civic engagement for our community’s young people has never been more important. Through KC 2020, Stepping Stones wants to teach children and youth how they can have a choice and a voice in matters that mean the most to them.

WE HEART OUR COMMUNITY

While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to challenge our daily lives in so many ways, we are witnessing everyday acts of civic engagement and heroism in our community that give us hope for the future. From the medical professionals and first responders on the emergency front lines to those working in stores or delivering needed goods and supplies to our homes to the educators and parents teaming up to teach our children in person and remotely to all of those filling a litany of essential roles, our community is forever grateful.

To show solidarity with and an appreciation for our local heroes as well as to honor the museum’s 20th anniversary, Stepping Stones is hosting the We Heart Our CommUNITY commemorative tile donation campaign to permanently recognize these contributions. With online donations of $150 per tile, you can commission a beautiful, hand-crafted tile to honor one or more individuals or organizations in our community that have exemplified heroism during this crisis. All tiles will be displayed in a dedicated, high-traffic area of the museum to forever remember these heroes, their sacrifices and devotion. In addition, Stepping Stones itself has honored the volunteers of Filling in the Blanks, the staff at Yale New Haven Health and the volunteers of Person-to-Person for the amazing work and exemplary they have done over the last several months.

So far, we’ve raised more than $14,000, which means we’ll be installing 94 new tiles. We want to install many more and you can help us in that regard. You can honor a local community hero and support our award-winning children’s museum at the same time. This important campaign will continue for the remainder of the year.
