Stories from the Archives... In the 1800s, wealthy families travelled by horse-drawn carriage driven by a personal coachman, who took them when and where they wanted to go. Wages ranged from $9 to $20 a month plus board. At the Mansion, circa 1868, Bayman, the Lockwood’s coach lived above the carriage barn, which was large enough to accommodate twelve horses and twenty carriages and also contained a hayloft and harness room. From here, Bayman could ready his team and coach and be in close proximity to Legrand Lockwood, who expected reliable, and quickly readied transportation.
