About us

One Medical challenges the notion that delivering high-quality, accessible health care is unachievable and prohibitively expensive. In fact, we’re working to prove that just the opposite is possible — a system where quality care is affordable and available to everyone. To bring this vision to life, we rely on people-centered design, smart application of technology, and a team of talented primary care providers who have the time and tools to make the right decisions. The integration of these elements allows us to offer a seamless experience that not only saves our patients time and money but also leads to better health outcomes and happier lives.

    SVP Health Services at Amazon

I was recently inspired by Dr. Alani Gregory, a primary care physician and head of Diversity, Inclusion & Health Equity at One Medical. Alani’s personal approach to health care, her point of view on techquity (a new word for me!), and the passion she has for caring for patients are all excellent reminders of how what we do matters. Alani shared this experience with our Amazon Health Services colleagues, as part of an internal leadership spotlight — and with her permission, I’m sharing excerpts of it here as well. Alani, thank you for all you do, for being part of the team, and for embodying the passion of our collective mission — making it dramatically easier to get and stay healthy. ++ I’m Alani Gregory, MD, a primary care physician and Head of Diversity, Inclusion & Health Equity at One Medical. Over the past two years I’ve been working across One Medical to embed DEI and health equity in everything we do. The work that continues to keep me grounded is the 1:1 time with my patients, as I can feel the difference we’re making in people’s lives. Sometimes I forget the gravity of the work we do in health care, but I was recently reminded when I delivered an unexpected life-changing diagnosis to one of my patients. The days that followed were a whirlwind of getting them urgently into the emergency room, speaking with specialists, and reassuring them that their One Medical team would be there every step of the way. After their hospitalization, we had an appointment. We exchanged pleasantries and in a solemn tone they said, “Dr. Gregory, thank you for saving my life.” My first instinct was to brush it off as hyperbole—I was simply doing the work I’ve been called to do. But as we looked at each other, the weightiness of their words caused me to tear up. Our goal of making it dramatically easier for people to get and stay healthy is an urgent and life-saving mission. And it serves us and our members well to keep that notion at the forefront of the work we do. This is why it’s imperative we approach our work with a degree of intentionality that honors the human lives we are hoping to impact. This brings me to a word I’ve been hearing a lot lately and have been pondering: techquity. Techquity is the “strategic design, development and deployment of technology to advance health equity.” Due to historical and present-day systemic barriers, people from historically marginalized groups often experience worse health outcomes, even within well-meaning health systems. Techquity acknowledges the idea that health technology can be a barrier or a bridge to more accessible, equitable care. I am confident what we are doing at Amazon Health Services can be a bridge, but this takes intentionality and leaning into the principles of DEI. We have a unique opportunity as we grow together and address the papercuts to ensure that historically marginalized groups are top of mind as we create, innovate, and build our teams. It quite literally may save lives. ++
